Further information sought for Durham council boundaries

Decision on unitary local government in Devon, Norfolk and Suffolk

On 10 February 2010, the Government announced its decision on unitary local government structures in Devon, Norfolk and Suffolk.

  • In Devon, the Government will implement Exeter City Council's original bid for unitary status on current boundaries.
  • In Norfolk, the Government will implement Norwich City Council's original bid for unitary status on current boundaries.
  • In Suffolk, the Government have taken no decision, and will instead set up a constitutional convention in the county to ask elected representatives to agree on local government structure.

In the case of Exeter and Norwich, the Government has announced that elections to Exeter City Council and Norwich City Council, planned for May 2010, will be cancelled. Full-council elections to the new city unitary authorities will be held in 2011.

The decision follows the submission on 7 December 2009 of the Boundary Committee for England's advice for Norfolk, Suffolk and Devon.

The statement can be found on the Department for Communities and Local Government website.

New body to oversee local government boundaries

The Local Democracy, Economic Development and Construction Act 2009 is now law. This means from 1 April 2010 responsibility for setting local government boundaries is transferred to the new Local Government Boundary Commission for England. Read more in our press release.
