A UK Parliamentary general elections is often referred to simply as a 'general election'. The voting system is commonly called 'first past the post', where each voter has one vote to choose a candidate to represent their constituency, and the candidate who wins the highest number of votes becomes the elected MP. At the 2005 general election there were 646 constituencies.
