Voting system
The voting system in a UK general election is commonly called 'first past the post', where each voter has one vote to choose a candidate to represent their constituency, and the candidate who wins the highest number of votes becomes the elected MP. At the 2005 general election there were 646 constituencies. You can find out which constituency you live in, and find out more about the electoral system for general elections at www.aboutmyvote.co.uk.
