Local government elections in England on 4 June 2009
Local government elections in certain parts of England will take place on 4 June 2009.
Referendums
The Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000 (PPERA) sets out the legal framework under which UK-wide, national and regional referendums will be held. Within this framework, we have a number of powers and responsibilities, including:
- commenting on the intelligibility of the referendum question and development of question assessment guidelines (PDF)
- registering as ‘permitted participants’ campaigners spending over £10,000 within the regulated period
- monitoring campaign expenditure in the run-up to the referendum
- designating lead campaign organisations for each side of the referendum question
- producing a post-referendum report on campaign expenditure
- producing a post-referendum report on the administration of the referendum
In addition, our chairman (or an appointee) would be the Chief Counting Officer, with responsibility for appointing Counting Officers for each relevant area and announcing the result.
