Our role
We aim to promote public involvement in the democratic process. One of the ways we do this is by developing people's knowledge and understanding of how our democracy works. This includes building knowledge of the UK's electoral and democratic systems and of the European Unions institutions.
Since 2001, we have established a wide programme of work aimed at raising public awareness and promoting participation through UK-wide campaigns, outreach work and the provision of grants to external projects.
All of our public awareness work is underpinned by research. This ensures that what we do is based on sound evidence and takes account of what the public think, and know, about politics and voting. It helps us to understand why people don't vote and what might encourage them to do so in future, and it allows us to target our work to different audiences.
Our public awareness role is set out in more detail in Section 13 of the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000.
