This page gives further detail about All Wales People First. An organisation that was funded through the Partnership Grants scheme.
All Wales People First campaigns to improve the lives of people with learning disabilities throughout Wales. They provide capacity building support and enable self advocacy groups to network through sharing information. They also provide a link between people with learning disabilities and the National Assembly for Wales.

Switched On To Politics

The project delivered a series of interactive residential two day workshops. These workshops trained people with learning disabilities and their Support Workers from People First projects across Wales. The project enabled People First projects to cascade learning through peer education.

The project also delivered seminars to organisations supporting learning disabled people and undertook roadshows providing presentations to learning disabled people directly. A printed toolkit was also developed explaining the voting process.

Our grant funded salaries, administration costs, training for beneficiaries and venue hire.

Project outcomes

  • people with learning disabilities will gain a better understanding of how to register to vote and exercise their vote
  • people with learning disabilities will gain an understanding of democratic institutions and the influence they have within them
  • increase the numbers of disabled people registering to vote

Outcomes achieved

The project successfully met the outcome targets that were set. The project was structured to deliver training that explored the process of voting, political structures, how policies are developed, MP shadowing and leadership skills. A series of one day workshops were delivered covering voting and politics in day centres across Wales.

The project increased the understanding of how to register to vote for 442 learning disabled people that attended the training and events. Thirty five per cent of course and workshop beneficiaries either registered to vote, or indicated their intention to register.

Case study

AWPF

Lucy was a member of Pembrokeshire People First. She was interested in attending the residential training as she was not sure that she was registered to vote, had little understanding of how the Welsh Assembly government works and the purpose of local authorities. After attending the course Lucy registered to vote, and stated that her knowledge and understanding of how political institutions work had increased.
