Home movers

Each year since 2005 we have run a home-movers campaign from January to March.

Research has shown that people who have recently moved house are unlikely to have registered to vote at their new address. The campaign is deliberately positioned between the end of the annual canvass in December and the elections in May, to catch people who have moved since the canvass so that they do not miss out on the opportunity to vote in their new locality.

There is no national database of people who have moved, so we compile data from a variety of sources in order to find addresses with new occupants. We then send a letter and two voter registration forms to each address as a reminder of the need to register to vote. The forms have the address of the local electoral registration office printed on them, so home-movers just need to fill in their new details and put the form in the post.

In recent years this has been a highly successful campaign, with approximately 90,000 new registrations in 2007 and around 85,000 in 2008.
