Research suggests that there may be as many as 5.5 million British citizens living abroad for a year or more. British citizens who have been resident in the UK and registered to vote within the last 15 years are eligible to register to vote as overseas voters in UK Parliamentary and European Parliamentary elections in the UK. However, only a fraction of those eligible are registered to vote. Overseas voters can apply to vote by post or by proxy if they will be outside the UK on polling day
We launched a campaign on 16 September 2009 targeting British citizens overseas to encourage them to register to vote.
The campaign will run for a month and a half and consists of the following strands:
- Online advertising in websites targeted at British expats abroad, supported through year long sponsored search targeting.
- Supporting PR activity in expat media within countries with a high population of British expats.
- Partnership work with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to send posters and leaflets to UK consulates and embassies in the countries with the highest numbers of British expatriates. We will also work to feature information on embassy websites.
