Projects working with disabled people

This page gives details of the various New Initiatives Fund projects we have funded which were working with disabled people.

British Deaf Association Wales' Electoral Access project worked to empower and support deaf people in gaining information of local and national issues, and to vote independently. 

Capability Scotland updated and improved their Vote 2004 website with information and links of relevance to disabled voters. 

New Economics Foundation's People's Cafe project ran discussion events aimed at engaging disabled people in civic life. 

Spiral Skills worked with people with learning disabilities in Northumberland in their Right to Vote project to produce accessible leaflets about democratic processes and institutions. 

Voluntary Action Leicesters VALUES Active Citizen project established citizenship groups to encourage people with a learning disability to get involved in consultation processes. It also helped them to understand the electoral process. 

The London Borough of Wandsworth developed a Voting Information Booklet for people with a disability, in partnership with the Makaton Vocabulary Development project.

Eich Dewis Chi/Your Choice ran the My Voice-My Vote project for people with learning disabilities to increase their participation in the democratic process.

CARES Sandwell ran the Postal Votes for Carers project, to inform carers and the people they care for of the opportunity to cast their vote by post.

Mencap's Count Me In project aims to increase awareness of democratic and governmental processes amongst people with learning difficulties in London through running peer-led training courses. This project is currently running and an evaluation will be available shortly.

RNID Northern Ireland Access to Democracy Project supported Deaf and hard of hearing people to meet their politicians directly and produced a DVD on the political structures in Northern Ireland.
