On 5 May 2011, elections took place to the Scottish Parliament, National Assembly for Wales and Northern Ireland Assembly as well as local elections in Northern Ireland and some parts of England. A UK-wide referendum was also held on the same day.
Ahead of 5 May, we conducted a public awareness campaign to alert people of the different events taking place in their area.
Our public awareness campaign
Our public awareness campaign for the elections and referendum on 5 May launched on Friday 1 April.
During the campaign, we sent out around 27 million information booklets (scroll down to the bottom of the page to see these), one for every household in the UK on the elections and referendum. This was also supported by an advertising campaign across television, radio and online. Some examples of our adverts are below:

Northern Ireland adverts
Our public awareness campaign for the elections to the Northern Ireland Assembly and local councils as well as the referendum on the voting system used to elect MPs to the House of Commons launched on Friday 25 March.
As part of the campaign, we sent 750,000 information booklets, one for every household in Northern Ireland on the elections and referendum. This was also supported by an advertising campaign across television, radio, online and press. Some examples of our press adverts are below

Our UK public information booklets
From 4 April 2011 (28 March in Northern Ireland) we sent public information booklets to all households across the UK. There were separate booklets for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to reflect the different elections that took place.
