What others did to promote voter registration

Central government

As with other recent polls, we worked with the Cabinet Office which mobilised cross-government activity.

Registration reminders were featured on key transaction pages throughout the gov.uk website. The page that generated the most traffic was the completed driving license application page.

They also co-ordinated activity across government social media channels with a reach of over 2.25million.

Local authorities

Given their detailed knowledge about their local communities, local authorities play a crucial role in running electoral registration, particularly when the election is called at short notice. Below are three examples of some of the work local authorities did to support the general election.

Barnsley City Council ran co-ordinated social media activity encouraging people in the area to vote with easy read voting guides, polling station information and reminders about what to do on the day.

Bradford City Council ran a voter registration campaign targeting home movers and renters using online advertising on social media and sites like Gumtree.

They then re-targeted people who engaged with the registration campaign in the run-up to polling day to provide them with polling station information.

The activity helped contribute to the highest registration rate ever in the area.

South Staffordshire used our resources and gave them a local twist to get the message out via social media, email alerts and messages to staff.
