A strategy and policy statement for the Electoral Commission
Changes introduced by the government
The strategy and policy statement for the Electoral Commission was introduced on 29 February 2024
The statement sets out the UK Government’s priorities for electoral matters and our strategic direction.
We are required to follow what is laid out in the statement and report to the Speaker’s Committee for the Electoral Commission on how we are meeting the UK Government’s priorities.
Our view
The Strategy and Policy Statement which enables the government to set the strategic direction for the work of the Commission is not consistent with the role that an independent Commission plays in a healthy democracy. This independence is fundamental to maintaining confidence in our electoral system and vital to the health of our democracy.
