What is the Elections Act?

The UK government is making changes to the UK electoral system. The Election Act contains measures that affect:

  • elections and the way we vote
  • campaigning and the rules on campaign spending and funding
  • parliamentary oversight of the Electoral Commission

Changes that have come into force so far include:

  • Requirement to show ID at polling stations
  • Changes to postal and proxy voting
  • Improving the accessibility of elections
  • The introduction of digital imprints
  • Preventing undue influence and a new intimidatory sanction
