New postal vote re-application letter templates for EROs

As a result of changes made under the Elections Act 2022, EROs must now send a notification to domestic electors who have a postal vote arrangement in place for UK Parliamentary and Police and Crime Commissioner elections which is due to expire on the 31 January of each year. The form of the notice is not prescribed, but it must inform the elector of the date on which their arrangement will end and that they will need to make a fresh application if they wish to remain a postal voter.

To support EROs with this, we have produced a template letter that you can use to invite postal voters to re-apply. More information can be found in our guidance on the process for informing postal voters of the requirement to re-apply and in our guidance on the contents of the postal vote re-application notification.

For electors who have a permanent postal voting arrangement for Senedd and/or local government elections, the existing arrangements remain in place. EROs must notify postal voters when their signature on the personal identifiers record is more than five years old that a fresh signature is required for their postal voting arrangement(s) for these polls to continue. We have updated our postal vote refresh template letter to help postal voters distinguish between these two processes.
