Democratic engagement - Partnership working in Wales

The Electoral Commission has launched a new project with TPAS Cymru to enhance awareness and understanding of the democratic system amongst social housing residents in Wales. Research has consistently highlighted that housing tenure has a significant impact on voter registration; 82% of housing association residents in Wales are correctly registered to vote compared to 94% of those that own their home.

The project will aim to increase residents’ knowledge and understanding of democracy, including key concepts such as devolution, the role of the Senedd, how to register and cast your vote. It will also embed the practice of encouraging conversations on democracy year-round to effectively build knowledge, not just during the pre-election period.

As the Welsh Government’s appointed organisation for Tenant Engagement, TPAS Cymru operate pan-Wales, collaborating with and supporting all Housing Associations registered in Wales and their residents. They have an extensive knowledge of social housing with a focus on issues from the tenant perspective and for tenants’ benefit.

Upcoming project activities will include running peer to peer training workshops, a communications campaign and briefing TPAS’ various network groups.

This partnership will run from December onwards with an initial evaluation period in March. If you have any questions or you would like more information, please contact Aimee Coulson, Stakeholder Engagement Adviser at [email protected].
