Working with the Police Area Returning Officer (PARO)

If you are not also the PARO, you will need to work closely with them during the planning stages to help inform decisions made regarding the delivery of the election.

The PARO can issue directions on some key functions, and if this power is used, you must follow these directions.

It is important that you keep the PARO up to date with the progress of the election process you are responsible for, as well as with any emerging issues in your voting area.

If there is a need for exchanging data electronically, you should agree the timings for the exchange of data and ensure that a test of the process is carried out ahead of the first scheduled transfer. You should ensure that data protection is considered and that any transfer of data is secure.

For further information on the PARO role see our guidance for PAROs
