Declaring the Constituency Assembly Member election results
The candidate with the greatest number of votes at the Constituency Assembly Member election must be declared elected.1
Public notice of the name of the winning candidate and their description (if any)must be made, which must by law include details of the votes given for all the candidates and the number of rejected votes broken down into the relevant categories.
Following the agreed process as advised by the GLRO, you must as soon as practicable notify the GLRO of the results of the Constituency Assembly member election.2
At the same time you must send the finalised local totals of the number of votes given at the London-wide Assembly Member election to City Hall. The GLRO will advise when you can inform any candidates and agents present and declare your local result.
When planning for the declaration of the local results you should:
decide on the exact location in the venue where public announcements and declarations will take place and who will be on the platform at these times
ensure the platform is accessible for all those who need to get up on it
consider if you could make use of display boards to provide a suitable backdrop for the announcement of local totals
check any equipment that you will use for the announcement before the proceedings begin
double-check that the local total is accurate, and that it is written in the form of words for oral delivery in order to avoid any errors - you may need to repeat the declaration so that those in attendance are able to hear the detail clearly, particularly where there is noise from those attending
London Elects will prepare a declaration script for you to refer to
when a candidate has used their commonly used name to stand in an election, you should use both their full name and their commonly used name when declaring the result
once the result is declared, it is final and cannot be amended, however if you make an error in your oral announcement you can correct this, provided it is done immediately
consider how you will provide media representatives in attendance with a written copy of the local totals at the time the announcement is made as this will help them to ensure that their transmission of figures is accurate
make sure you follow the requirement to draw up a final statement and make a declaration of the local totals and the details of the rejected ballot papers under each heading
