Voter registration campaigning: is it regulated?
Ahead of elections, lots of people and organisations run campaigns to encourage people to register to vote or help them understand how to use their vote in the election. Each year these campaigns make a really important contribution to getting as many eligible people as possible on the electoral registers, supporting the work done by local authorities, political parties and by us.
Campaign activity is regulated when it can reasonably be seen as trying to influence the way people vote.
Campaigns that are only about voter registration or raising awareness of how to vote are unlikely to be regulated campaign activity. It would only be regulated if it could also be reasonably seen as trying to influence people to vote a particular way. Find out more about which campaign activity might be regulated.
Whether a campaign is regulated is dependent on each individual case.
If your campaign is regulated, this doesn’t mean that you cannot do what you were planning. However, here may be a limit to what you can spend, and you may have to report information about what you did after the election.
You can contact us for advice on your campaign. We will review any material and provide bespoke advice. We host regular webinars to discuss the laws around campaigning.
