The spending limit

The maximum amount that you can spend on campaigning during the regulated period is based on how many candidates you are standing in each constituency.

There are 16 constituencies in Wales. There are six seats in each constituency, but a party can field up to eight candidates on their list for a constituency.

Each constituency your party is contesting adds an amount to your spending limit, based on the number of candidates you are standing in that constituency. The spending limit is a national limit, which means you do not have to attribute your spending to particular constituencies. There is no constituency spending limit.

For each constituency you are standing in, you add between £52,500 and £70,000 to your spending limit, as set out in the table below.1   If you stand at least six candidates in a constituency, you will get the maximum of £70,000.

Number of candidatesTotal added to spending limit
1£52,500
2£56,000
3£59,500
4£63,000
5£66,500
6-8£70,000

If your party is standing at least six candidates in every constituency, your total spending limit will be £1,120,000:
£70,000 × 16 = £1,120,000

For example, your party is contesting six constituencies. In one constituency you are standing eight candidates, in three you are standing six candidates, and in two constituencies you are only standing a single candidate.

The four constituencies you are standing at least six candidates in each contribute £70,000 to your spending limit. The two constituencies you are standing one candidate in each contribute £52,500 to your limit.

Your national spending limit is (4 x £70,000) + (2 x £52,500) = £385,000
