Guidance for Candidates and Agents at Police and Crime Commissioner elections

Will the election be contested or uncontested?

After the close of nominations, the PARO will establish whether or not there is a need to hold a poll.1  If there is more than one candidate standing validly nominated across the police area after the deadline for withdrawals, there will be a poll.

If there is going to be a poll, the Police and Crime Commissioner will be elected under the first-past-the-post voting system. Further information on the voting system can be found in our guidance 'the electoral system'.

If, however, after the deadline for withdrawals there is only one candidate standing, the PARO will declare that candidate elected.

If elected at an uncontested election, candidates must still make a declaration as to their election spending. You can find more information in our guidance about submitting spending returns and taking up office.
