Application decisions

Approved

If we are satisfied that your application meets the statutory tests, then we must register your party. We will confirm our decision in writing as soon as possible, as well as confirming the effective date of registration.

Descriptions and emblems are not required for a party to be registered, so your party may be registered even if one or more descriptions/emblems have been refused. If this happens, we will let you know when we write to you to confirm our decision.

Refused

If we are not satisfied that your application meets the tests for registration, we must refuse it. We will write to you to explain in detail why any part of your application has been refused.

A party cannot be registered if:

  • its name does not meet the statutory tests
  • its financial scheme or constitution do not meet the statutory tests
  • it does not provide a declaration of assets and liabilities or a record that meets the requirements of the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000 (PPERA)
  • its application does not include required information
  • information included in its application is not consistent with electoral law.

If your application is refused, we can support you in making changes ahead of you resubmitting your application. We would then consider it as a fresh application.

If you make a second application within one calendar month of our written decision, the registration fee will be waived. Any applications after that will require payment of the non-refundable application fee.
