Guidance for Candidates and Agents at Greater London Authority elections

Members of Parliaments and Assemblies 

Members of:

  • the House of Commons
  • the Scottish Parliament
  • the Senedd 
  • the Northern Ireland Assembly

cannot be the Mayor of London.1 While they can stand as a candidate at the election, if successful, the individual would have to resign their current seat within eight calendar days of being elected as the Mayor of London.

The Mayor of London standing for election to UK Parliament

The Mayor of London cannot be a member of:2

  • the UK Parliament
  • the Scottish Parliament
  • the Senedd 
  • the Northern Ireland Assembly

While they can stand as a candidate at the above mentioned elections, if successful, the Mayor would have to resign their seat as Mayor of London within eight calendar days of being elected to the relevant seat.
